Abstract

In this research, the hydrodynamic behavior of the packed-agitated column including an agitation and irregular packed sections was evaluated. The column performance was evaluated to extract thorium ions from an aqueous solution. The effect of operating parameters on the hydrodynamic conditions of the column was investigated. The results showed that the increase in operating parameters including agitation speed, dispersed phase velocity and continuous phase velocity is associated with an increase in the thorium extraction efficiency. The maximum extraction efficiency was equal to 97.54% at the agitation speed equal to 220 rpm and the dispersed phase and continuous phase velocities equals to 0.66 mm/s. The increment in the agitation speed leads to the decrease in droplet size and the narrower droplet size distribution. By the increase in the continuous phase velocity under constant conditions for other parameters, the resistance is created to the movement of the dispersed phase droplets. Therefore, the slip velocity decreases.
